Kustanay (English spelling)

Kustanay (English spelling)

The capital of Kustanay Oblast, Republic of Kazakhstan, Central Asia. It is also written as Kostanay or Qostanay. It was called Nikolaevsk from 1893 to 1895. It has a population of 221,400 (1999), 245,650 (2019 estimate). The city stretches along the left bank of the Tobol River, a tributary of the Ob River. It is a railroad junction to Chelyabinsk and other cities in Russia. In the past, the city was a semi-domestic food and leather industry, but after World War II, it became a major industrial and cultural center, and heavy industries such as steel, machinery, chemical fibers, and building materials developed. In addition to the discovery and development of useful mineral resources in the vicinity, the city experienced remarkable development in the 1960s as a result of the tradition of immigration from the Volga region since 1879 and the "virgin land development" movement during the Soviet era.
