A general term for the wood of several species of the genus Carya , a deciduous tree of the Walnut family native to North America. Its dense, strong and elastic wood is well known for its use in construction, furniture, crafts, and especially for skiing. The wood quality varies depending on the species, and examples include Carya laciniosa ( big shellbark hickory), Carya ovata ( shagbark hickory), and Carya tomentosa ( big-bud hickory).
