Nectar is a sugary liquid secreted from the nectar glands of plants, and the English word nectar comes from nectar, the drink of the gods in Greek mythology. Nectaries are a type of secretory tissue, and are divided into intrafloral nectar glands that are related to flowers and extrafloral nectar glands that form in parts unrelated to flowers. Intrafloral nectar glands are formed in various places within a flower depending on the plant, and extrafloral nectar glands are formed in various places depending on the plant, such as on the petiole, stipules, and leaf serrations. Both types attract insects and birds that like nectar, and plants often benefit from the actions of these insects, such as aiding in pollination.
