…A delightful tale of adventures by Baron Münchhausen, commonly known as the “Baron de Münchhausen.” In the 18th century, there was a local aristocrat named Hieronymus Karl Friedrich Freiherr von Münchhausen (1720-97) who loved hunting and was good at telling tall tales. The first-person protagonist of “The Tales of Münchhausen” is modeled on this man, and in a good mood he recounts tall tales of his hunting and travels, tall tales, and fantastic adventures to his friends. Although much of the material is rather folklore, it was the exiled German Rudolf Erich Raspe (1737-94) who compiled the fragmentary anecdotes and first linked them to the name of Münchhausen and published an English version (first edition 1785). …
