Tepic (English spelling)

Japanese: テピク(英語表記)Tepic
Tepic (English spelling)
The capital of Nayarit State in western Mexico. It is located about 200 km northwest of Guadalajara, at an altitude of about 900 m at the foot of Sanganguey Volcano, overlooking the Tepic River. Since the railroad was established in 1912, it has developed rapidly and become the commercial and industrial center of the surrounding agricultural region. It distributes corn, sugarcane, rice, coffee, tobacco, etc., and has sugar refineries, rice mills, and other food processing plants. It is an old town founded in 1542, and although the city has been modernized, the cathedral, city hall, Amado Nervo Theater, and other buildings and streets retain the atmosphere of the Spanish colonial era. The Indians of the Cora and Huichol tribes live in the surrounding mountains. It is the home of the University of Nayarit (1930). Population: 238,101 (estimated 1990).
