Mount Kasuga

Japanese:
Mount Kasuga

It refers to the mountains in the eastern part of Nara city, east of Mikasayama (Mikasayama). In the past, the name Kasugayama included Hanayama (497m above sea level), the main peak, Kouzen (Takayama) to the south, and Mikasayama to the west. Although it is sometimes used to refer to Hanayama now, the plateau-like area bordering Mikasayama to the east is generally called Kasugayama, and Hanayama to the east, along with Hoyama, is included in the Kasuga Okuyama. As the sacred mountains of Kasuga Taisha Shrine, hunting and cutting down trees have been prohibited on Kasugayama and Mikasayama, so they have retained their dense primeval forests (special natural monuments) to this day, and are habitats for the Loomis Shijimi (national natural monument) and deer. In addition to the Kasugayama Stone Buddha and Jigokudani Stone Buddha, which are both national historic sites, there are also Uguisunotaki waterfall, Myokendo temple, Asahi Kannon, Reclining Buddha, and Kubikiri Jizo, and the Kasuga Okuyama-Wakakusayama Driveway runs through the area. Kasugayama Primeval Forest was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1998 (Heisei 10) (eight shrines and temples, including Todaiji Temple, are registered as cultural properties of the ancient capital of Nara).
