Hartford Convention

A secret convention held in Hartford, Connecticut, from December 15, 1814 to January 5, 1815. During the War of 1812, representatives of Federalists from the New England states gathered to express their dissatisfaction with President J. Madison's commercial regulation policies and the war itself. The convention adopted a strong state rights agenda and a set of military and commercial grievances, but the war was soon over and the secrecy of the convention's proceedings led to distrust, so it had no impact on the masses. Instead, it was unpopular in the midst of rising nationalism and was the final cause of the decline of the Federalists.
