Boat - BOOTO (English spelling)

Japanese: ボート - ぼーと(英語表記)boat
Boat - BOOTO (English spelling)

Originally, it was a general term for small, deckless boats that were propelled by rowing with oars or engines. They were also called short boats or short boats. Later, as their uses diversified to include transporting people and cargo within ports, bays, and inland seas, work, and marine leisure, the name changed and it became a general term for small boats and small ships used for such purposes.

In addition to short boats and lifeboats, there are a variety of boats for different purposes, such as launches and ferry boats for communication and transporting people, pilot boats, quarantine boats, customs boats, tugboats and line handling boats for towing other ships and mooring operations, and escort boats for guiding large ships or ships carrying hazardous materials and guarding their routes.

Boats are distinguished from ships that sail on the open sea, but the word boat is also used in compound words such as steamboat, cargo boat, and passenger boat.
