An active andesite volcano in the central-northern part of Fukushima Prefecture. It is also called Dakeyama in Nihonmatsu City on the east side, and Numajiriyama in Inawashiro Town on the west side. It is a collective name for the peaks that run from north to south, including Oshoyama (1,602 meters), the main peak Adatarayama (1,700 meters), Tetsuyama (1,709 meters), Minowayama (1,728 meters), and Kimenyama (1,482 meters). The last eruption in recorded history was a steam explosion at the Numanotaira crater (over 1 kilometer in diameter, about 150 meters deep) on the west side of Tetsuyama between 1899 and 1900 (Meiji 32-33). In particular, a major explosion in July 1900 killed 72 and injured 10 of the 83 employees of the sulfur mine inside the crater, and caused a river of sulfur to burst through the western crater wall and spill out. The source of Numajiri Hot Springs is also near the crater. It is part of Bandai-Asahi National Park and is easily accessible to ordinary climbers throughout the year. Numajiri and Nakanosawa Hot Springs on the west side, Dake Hot Springs on the east side, and Noji Hot Springs on the north side are all good bases for climbing, and in winter it becomes a great ski resort. Takamura Kotaro's poetry collection "Chieko Sho" includes a song about the mountain, "Atatarayama." The Fukushima Regional Meteorological Observatory constantly monitors the volcano.
