Court-like, urban-like, elegant, refined, graceful. In contrast to "hinabi" (country-like), "miyabi" expresses refinement. In court socializing, a style of behavior developed that valued human feelings, rejected vulgarity, and expressed them in a rich, tasteful way. It was expected that this would be displayed especially in love between men and women, as seen in "Mayabiwo" (Furyu-shi) No. 126 in the "Manyoshu" and "Ichihayakimiyabi" (Ichihayakimiyabi), the first section of the "Tales of Ise."
