Miyabi

Court-like, urban-like, elegant, refined, graceful. In contrast to "hinabi" (country-like), "miyabi" expresses refinement. In court socializing, a style of behavior developed that valued human feelings, rejected vulgarity, and expressed them in a rich, tasteful way. It was expected that this would be displayed especially in love between men and women, as seen in "Mayabiwo" (Furyu-shi) No. 126 in the "Manyoshu" and "Ichihayakimiyabi" (Ichihayakimiyabi), the first section of the "Tales of Ise." 宮廷風，都会風であること，風流，風雅，優美であること。〈鄙(ひな)び〉（田舎風）に対して〈宮び〉は洗練されたさまを表す。宮廷の社交において，人情をとうとび，粗野になることを排しつつ情趣豊かにそれを表現する行動様式が発達した。《万葉集》126番〈風流士〉（みやびを），《伊勢物語》初段〈いちはやきみやび〉などのように，特に男女の恋愛において発揮されることが期待された。
