A former town in Inashiki County in southern Ibaraki Prefecture. Established as a town in 1983. It is made up of the Tsukuba Inashiki Plateau and the lowlands along Ushiku Swamp. Rice and vegetables are cultivated here. It is part of the Tsukuba Science City area and is home to the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute.
