Japanese: 竪紙 - たてがみ

Originally, it was a term used in contrast to horizontal paper. Washi paper is spun on a horizontal sukigeta (paper mat), so when it is used horizontally, the grain runs vertically. This is called vertical paper, but when it is used vertically, the grain runs horizontally and it becomes horizontal paper. The terms horizontal paper usage and horizontal paper breaking are based on this. Therefore, vertical paper is when washi paper is used in a natural way according to the grain, that is, as a single horizontal sheet of paper. Vertical writing is when characters are written on it. In paleography, it is explained as a term used in contrast to origami, which is vertical paper folded, and kirigami, which is vertical paper cut, but this is based on the assumption that vertical paper is the most natural and therefore correct usage.

本来は横紙に対する言葉である。和紙は横長の漉桁（すきげた）ですくから，横長のまま用いると，すき目が竪になっている。これが竪紙で，逆に縦長に用いると，すき目が横になり横紙となる。横紙使い，横紙破りという言葉はこれにもとづく。したがって和紙をすき目に従って自然な形で，すなわち横長の一紙のままで使用するのが竪紙である。それに文字を書いた場合が竪文である。古文書学上，竪紙を折った折紙，また竪紙を切った切紙に対する言葉として説明されるが，それは竪紙がもっとも自然な，したがって正式な使い方であるということを前提にしている。
