Kenyan novelist and playwright. Son of a Kikuyu farmer. After graduating from Makerere University in Uganda, he studied at the University of Leeds in the UK. He is known for his works Don't Cry, My Child (1964), which depicts the turbulent period of the Mau Mau War; A Grain of Wheat (1967), which depicts the light and shadow leading up to independence; and Petals of Blood (1977), which depicts the corruption and betrayal of black bureaucrats and the leadership after independence. After that, he abandoned English and became a Kikuyu writer. His novels include The Devil on the Cross (1980) and Matigari (1986), and his play I'll Marry You When I Want to (1980).
