The term refers to the revival of the Renaissance architectural style that took place in Europe in the early 19th century. The German architect Friedrich von Gärtner (1792-1847) used a simple brick semicircular arch style similar to the Italian Romanesque and Renaissance styles in his Ludwigskirche (1829-40) and National Library (1831-40) in Munich, but this style was well suited to Germany's lack of stone and became popular, eventually leading to the adoption of an elegant Renaissance style such as in Semper's Court Opera in Dresden (1838-41).
