A general term for birds in the family Gaviidae (loons), or one of these species. Loons live on coasts, inland bays, and river mouths, and mainly feed by diving to eat fish. They are about 60-90 cm long. Adapted for a diving lifestyle, they have a long, slender body, a thick neck, and short, tapered wings compared to their body. They have a short tail. Their legs are located at the very back of their bodies, and their toes are webbed. They have straight, pointed beaks. In addition to fish, they feed on aquatic insects and frogs, and in the sea they feed on marine invertebrates such as crustaceans and mollusks.
