A type of neck shackle that ties cows in a stall. Tethered cowsheds have a long row of stalls (cow beds) for each cow, where the tethered cows eat, drink, defecate, and are milked. There are three ways to tether cows: vertical tethering, horizontal tethering, and scissors tethering, in addition to the simple method of tying the cows to a single fulcrum with a rope or chain. Among scissors tethering, the method in which the cow's neck is clamped with an iron pipe is called a stanchion, and the one that uses a log is called an open-close lattice. Stanchion tethering is sturdy and easy to attach and detach, but is expensive. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
