Nguyen Trai (English spelling)
1380‐1442
Vietnamese scholar and thinker of the early 15th century. When the Ming Emperor Yongle's army invaded Vietnam in 1406, with the aim of restoring the Tran Dynasty, Nguyen Trai's father, Nguyen Phi Khanh, famous for writing the Rui Xi Collection, was killed by the Ming army. Nguyen Trai hid in the fields and participated in the Le Loi uprising in Lam Son in 1418, helping Le Loi to oppose Ming rule. After ten years of conflict, when the Ming army retreated and the Le Dynasty was established, he became a central aide to Emperor Taizu Le Loi, serving as a royal agent and minister of personnel, and took control of the political center of the Le Dynasty.
