He strongly argued that Zhuangzi's "fables" are the essence of haiku, but he did not grasp the essence of Zhuangzi's ideas, and only accepted the terminology, materials, and expressions. In actual work, it refers to bizarre, humorous fictions, metaphorical expressions, etc.

〘名〙① 他の物事に仮託して、高遠な思想や教訓を述べた説話。→寓話。※河海抄（1362頃）一「其おもむき荘子の寓言におなじき物か」〔史記‐老荘申韓伝〕② 西山宗因にはじまり、岡西惟中の「俳諧蒙求」で展開主唱された、談林派の代表的な俳論。荘子の「寓言」こそ俳諧の本質であると力説したが、荘子の思想の本質をとらえるには至らず、用語や素材、表現面での受容にとどまった。実作の上では奇抜滑稽な虚構、比喩的表現などをいう。
