Gown - gown (English spelling)

Generally, it refers to a long dress or outer garment that is not fastened around the waist. In addition to the evening gown, which is formal attire for women, the bride's wedding gown (also called the bridal gown), and the Rococo-style Watteau gown from the early 18th century, it also includes night gowns and dressing gowns worn over nightgowns, bath gowns for after a bath, hostess gowns worn by the ladies of the household who entertain guests, and princess gowns with princess lines. After the Second World War, short gowns and gowns without sleeves appeared. Also, from the 14th century to around 1560, men wore it over their tunics and hose. It is a long, loose-fitting outer garment with large sleeves. From the mid-16th century onwards, it became a symbol of social status and rank. The term is used to refer to the long, loose outer garments worn by ancient people, such as the French robe, the judge's gown, the academic gown, the Geneva gown (often used as the ceremonial dress of Protestant clergymen), etc., which are mainly black or gray and are still in use today.

一般に、胴を締めない、丈の長いドレスや外衣をいう。婦人用の正装であるイブニング・ガウン、花嫁のウェディング・ガウン（ブライダル・ガウンともいう）、18世紀初頭のロココ調のワトー・ガウンなどのほか、寝巻の上に羽織るナイト・ガウンやドレッシング・ガウン、湯上がり用のバス・ガウン、客をもてなす家の婦人が着るホステス・ガウン、プリンセス・ラインをもつプリンセス・ガウンなども含まれる。第二次世界大戦後に、丈の短いものや、袖(そで)のないものが現れた。また、14世紀から1560年ごろまで、男子がチュニックとホーズ（脚衣）の上に着た。長くてゆったりした、大きな袖のついた外衣。これは16世紀中期以降は、社会的地位や身分を表徴するためのものとなった。主として黒色や灰色の、法服のジャッジ・ガウン、大学の式服のアカデミック・ガウン、ジュネーブ・ガウン（プロテスタントの牧師の式服としてもよく用いられる）などがあり、今日まで用いられている。このほか、古代人が着用した長くて緩やかな外衣、フランス語のローブの類も、こうよばれる。
