Nembutsu lecture - Nembutsu lecture

Japanese:
Nembutsu lecture - Nembutsu lecture

A group formed to chant Buddhist prayers. Usually, they gather at a temple or hall on a set day each month to chant prayers to the principal image or a stone Buddha by the roadside, praying for safety in the village and bountiful harvests, but when a death occurs in the village, they also become a group to chant prayers for the funeral. In most cases, the group is made up of elderly women, but there are many cases where men are also included. There are also cases where middle-aged and elderly women are involved and are very active. While it is a form of Buddhist prayer practice, it also has a strong meaning of socializing, such as bringing tea and snacks and chatting. Most are organized as a group, but there are also cases where multiple Buddhist prayer groups work together over a wide area, such as Chushun Dainenbutsu in Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture.
