These islands make up the northernmost part of Canada's Arctic archipelago. They belong to the Northwest Territories. A few hundred Eskimos live on Ellesmere Island and elsewhere, and there are only a few observation and communication stations. They have a tundra climate, and the mountains are covered with glaciers and permanent snow. Bathurst Island is where the North Magnetic Pole is located. They were named after Queen Elizabeth II, who ascended to the throne in 1952. [Masai Yasuo] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
