Japanese: クイナ(秧鶏) - クイナ

A species of bird in the family Rallidae, or a general term for birds in the same family. The rail Rallus aquaticus (illustration) is widely distributed in the mid-latitudes of the Eurasian continent, and those that breed in the north migrate south to spend the winter. In Japan, it breeds in the grasslands of lakes and marshes and wet grasslands of Hokkaido, but their numbers are small. It is a winter bird in central and southern Honshu. Total length is about 28 cm. The head, back, tail, and wings are brown with black spots, the face, throat, and chest are gray, the sides are brown vertical spots, and the abdomen and lower tail cover have white and black horizontal stripes.

ツル目クイナ科の鳥の1種，または同科の鳥の総称。クイナRallus aquaticus(イラスト)はユーラシア大陸の中緯度地域に広く分布し，北方で繁殖するものは南方に渡って越冬する。日本では北海道の湖沼の草地や湿性草原で繁殖するが，数は多くない。本州中部以南では冬鳥。全長約28cm。頭上から背，尾，翼は褐色で黒斑があり，顔，のど，胸部は灰色，わきに褐色縦斑，腹部から下尾筒に白色と黒色の横縞模様がある。
