An ancient fortress city from the late Hittite period, located at the foot of Mount Taurus in southeastern Turkey. It was captured by Assyria around 700 B.C. In 1945, H. Bossert discovered a bilingual inscription in hieroglyphics and Phoenician, facilitating the decipherment of the Hittite alphabet and language. Karatepe means "black hill."
