Silver-eyed snapper (silver-eyed snapper) - Silver-eyed snapper (silver-eyed snapper)
A marine fish of the family Alphonsidae in the order Alphonsidae (illustration). Found from central Honshu southwards, in the Philippines and Hawaii. The body is laterally compressed and covered with coarse small scales. The dorsal side is blue-gray and the ventral side is paler. The mouth is large, but the lower jaw is short, so it is called "agonashi" in the area around Misaki, Kanagawa Prefecture. There is a pair of barbels at the suture of the lower jaw. There is a black spot on the dorsal fin. It reaches a total length of 50 cm. It lives on sandy and muddy bottoms in the deep sea and is caught with bottom trawls. The flesh is white but not tasty, and is used as an ingredient in kamaboko (fish cake). [Hibiya Kyo]
