…The oldest intact example of English architecture remaining today is the church of Bradford-on-Avon. The simple Anglo-Saxon style, with few windows and thin, striated pilasters on the exterior walls, was in place from the 6th to the 11th centuries, but the conquest of England by William, Duke of Normandy, in 1066 ushered in a new era in English architecture. The heavy Norman style, characterized by semicircular arches and thick walls, was established and became mainstream from the end of the 11th century to the middle of the 12th century. …
