Kimberley Plateau

Japanese: キンバリー台地 - キンバリーだいち（英語表記）Kimberley Plateau

A general term for mountains and plateaus made of sandstone and basalt in the northern part of Western Australia, Australia. Also called the Kimberley Block. Often used synonymously with the Kimberley region (area: approx. 420,000 km2, population: 15,600, 1976) stretching from Broome to Wyndham. The main industry is beef cattle ranching, and pearl farming and irrigation agriculture can also be seen along the coast. There is a bauxite development plan (Mitchell Plateau). The name comes from the British Secretary of State for the Colonies. [Taniuchi Tatsu]

オーストラリア，ウェスタン･オーストラリア州北部にあり，砂岩，玄武岩から成る山地や台地の総称。Kimberley Blockともいう。ブルームからウィンダムに至るキンバリー地方(面積約42万km2，人口1万5600。1976)と同義に用いられることも多い。主産業は肉牛の放牧で，沿岸では真珠養殖や灌漑農業も見られる。ボーキサイト開発計画(ミッチェル台地)がある。名称はイギリス植民地大臣に由来する。【谷内達】
