…The Song dynasty's Guangyun and Jiyun are examples of this type of rhyme book. The Qiyun rhyme book was used as the standard for poetry rhyme for the imperial examination, so during the Song dynasty, a simplified version of Qiyun, called Yunlue, was popular, and because the 206-rhyme system of Guangyun was too detailed, it was simplified to 106 rhymes during the Yuan dynasty, which was used for poetry in later generations. These official rhymes were significantly different from the actual phonological system, so they were not useful for rhyming plays that were based on oral pronunciation. Therefore, Zhou Deqing of the Yuan dynasty abandoned the traditional rhyme book system for this rhyme book and created a new, groundbreaking rhyme book called Zhongyuan Phonetic, based on northern pronunciation. …
