It is also a good swimmer. It is said that the breeding season is not fixed in tropical regions. The gestation period is about 70 days, and it gives birth to 2-4 pups. 哺乳(ほにゅう)綱食肉目ネコ科の動物。北アメリカ南部から中央アメリカを経てブラジル南部、アルゼンチン北部までの森林に生息する。体長65～95センチメートル、尾長25～45センチメートル、体重16キログラムほどである。体色は変化に富むが、多くは灰褐色または黄褐色で、黒褐色の大きな帯状斑(はん)が縦に並ぶ。普通単独で生活するが、雄雌2頭でいることも多い。木登りが巧みで、樹上でサルや鳥類もとるが、おもに林の中の地上でネズミ、パカ、アグーチ、ヤマアラシ、小形のシカ、トカゲなどを捕食する。泳ぎも巧みである。繁殖期は熱帯地方では一定していないといわれる。妊娠期間は約70日で、1産2～4子。寿命は飼育下で17年以上。気が荒いが、飼育するとよくなれ、ペットとされることが多い。毛皮は模様が美しく高価であるため乱獲され、絶滅が心配されている。
