It is a member of the Felidae family of the Carnivora order of the Mammalia class. It inhabits forests from southern North America through Central America to southern Brazil and northern Argentina. Its body length is 65-95 cm, its tail length 25-45 cm, and it weighs about 16 kg. Its body color varies widely, but it is mostly gray-brown or yellowish brown with large vertical black-brown stripes. It usually lives alone, but there are often pairs of males and females. It is good at climbing trees and will hunt monkeys and birds from the trees, but it mainly preys on mice, pacas, agoutis, porcupines, small deer, lizards, etc. on the ground in the forest. It is also a good swimmer. It is said that the breeding season is not fixed in tropical regions. The gestation period is about 70 days, and it gives birth to 2-4 pups. It can live for more than 17 years in captivity. It is aggressive, but it can be tamed when kept as a pet, and it is often kept as a pet. Because their fur has beautiful patterns and is so valuable, they have been overhunted and are at risk of extinction.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱食肉目ネコ科の動物。北アメリカ南部から中央アメリカを経てブラジル南部、アルゼンチン北部までの森林に生息する。体長65~95センチメートル、尾長25~45センチメートル、体重16キログラムほどである。体色は変化に富むが、多くは灰褐色または黄褐色で、黒褐色の大きな帯状斑(はん)が縦に並ぶ。普通単独で生活するが、雄雌2頭でいることも多い。木登りが巧みで、樹上でサルや鳥類もとるが、おもに林の中の地上でネズミ、パカ、アグーチ、ヤマアラシ、小形のシカ、トカゲなどを捕食する。泳ぎも巧みである。繁殖期は熱帯地方では一定していないといわれる。妊娠期間は約70日で、1産2~4子。寿命は飼育下で17年以上。気が荒いが、飼育するとよくなれ、ペットとされることが多い。毛皮は模様が美しく高価であるため乱獲され、絶滅が心配されている。
