A belief in which humans are worshipped as gods, either while alive or after death. Also called kamijin. In Japan, when a living human is worshipped as a god, they are called ikigami (living god) or arahitogami (living human god). Humans who can become kami include sorcerers and priests who can exercise extraordinary magical powers, tribal chiefs and kings, and people with even more special and outstanding skills, such as outstanding dancers or soldiers, or people with physical disabilities that are different from ordinary people, dwarfs, and foreigners. There are many types of kami in Japanese folk beliefs, and they can be divided into those who become kami during their lifetime and those who are worshipped as kami after death. The latter is a custom that was adopted to calm the curse of those who died with resentment. Examples of the former include the head priest, shrine maiden, and disguised kamijin in the Shinto rituals of the shrine.
