Substances that cause renal hypertension. In 1939, IH Page et al. named the blood pressure increasing substance produced by the enzyme renin in the kidneys angiotonin, while E. Braun-Menéndez et al. called the same substance hypertensin, and later the two were unified and named angiotensin. In 1954, it was discovered that there are two types of angiotensin, which were named angiotensin I and angiotensin II. Angiotensinogen, a protein contained in the α2-globulin fraction of serum, is converted to the inactive decapeptide angiotensin I by the proteolytic enzyme renin present in the kidney, and this is converted to the physiologically active octapeptide angiotensin II by a converting enzyme in serum. This angiotensin II is a powerful blood pressure increasing substance and is considered to be the causative substance of renal hypertension.
