Eugène Carrière

French painter. Born in Gourenay. In 1870 he moved to Paris to study under Cabanel and then Jules Cheret. He stayed in London from 1877 to 1878. In 1879 he exhibited "Mother and Child" at the Salon, and thereafter he painted domestic scenes of mothers and children, and sick children, which were well received. His flexible use of color and light and shade led him to gradually produce almost monochromatic, misty paintings in sepia and silver-gray tones, known as "Art Brumeau," and for this reason he is often considered one of the painters on the fringes of Impressionism, but his dreamlike, spiritual atmosphere should be considered symbolism instead. In fact, he participated in Symbolist meetings at the Café Volpiny, and in the exhibition Liber Aesthetics. In 1904 he became the first president of the Salon d'Automne.

フランスの画家。グールネに生まれる。1870年パリに出てカバネル、ついでジュール・シェレに学ぶ。1877～1878年ロンドン滞在。1879年サロンに『母子』を出品、その後も母と子、病気の子などの家庭的情景を描き好評を得た。柔軟な色調と明暗の探求から、しだいにセピア、銀灰色などのほとんど単色の霧のような画面、いわゆる「霧の芸術(アール・ブリュモー)」を生み、そのためしばしば印象主義周辺の画家の一人とされるが、むしろその夢幻性、心霊表現風の雰囲気は象徴主義と考えるべきである。事実、カフェ・ボルピニの象徴派の会合にも参加している。自由美学展にも参加。1904年にはサロン・ドートンヌの初代会長に就任。
