A joto is someone who drinks a lot of alcohol, and a geto is someone who cannot drink alcohol. Both terms were used in the Heian period, with joto appearing in the Daikagura and geto in the Iroha Jiruishō. Also, in works such as the Nishinomiyaki, the term kouko is used instead of joto. In China, the terms taikosho and taiko had been used since before the Tang dynasty, and the term takato was also used. The terms joto and geto are thought to have evolved from these. The term chuuko also appears in the Muromachi period book Shuhanron. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
