Afar Depression

Djibouti is a triangular landmass with sides of about 500 km, located in northeastern Ethiopia, where the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the Great African Rift Valley meet. It is bounded by the Ethiopian Plateau, the Somali Plateau, and the Red Sea. It is a unique region that displays the properties of underwater crust despite being on land. It is located in the tropics, and the moist winds blowing from the ocean are blocked by the surrounding plateaus, so it is extremely dry and hot, and most of it is desert or savanna. There are few humans, animals, or plants. Nevertheless, the city of Djibouti, which faces the junction of the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, thrives as a key location on the sea route and an export port from Ethiopia, and has a population of 320,000.

エチオピア北東部で，紅海とアデン湾とアフリカ大地溝帯の三つが会合する所に位置し，エチオピア台地，ソマリア台地と紅海で囲まれた1辺500kmほどの三角形の陸地。陸上にありながら海底地殻の性質を示す特異な地域である。熱帯にあるうえ，海洋から吹く湿った風が周囲の台地によってさえぎられているので，いちじるしく乾燥して暑く，大部分は砂漠やサバンナとなっている。人間や動植物は少ない。それでも，アデン湾と紅海のつなぎ目に面する町ジブチは航路上の要地，エチオピアからの輸出港として栄え，32万の人口を有する。
