〘 noun 〙① Pouring hot tea on rice. Also, the thing itself. Chazu. Chazuke rice. ※Haiku poem, Toseimonzokugin Nijukasen (1680), Arashiyukidokugin: "I've slept and looked exhausted. I've only been eating chazuke."② A simple meal. Also, it means a simple meal. ※Yoakemae (1932-35), Shimazaki Toson, Part 1: "I don't have anything, but I'll serve you a bowl of chazuke, so please go around to the back door."③ An abbreviation of "chazuke ya (chazuke shop)②". ※Sakehon, Shirakawa Yafune (1789), Sumi Takaman: "I bet that chazuke guy is really waiting for me."④ An abbreviation of "chazuke meshi (chazuke rice)③".
