Coronary Care Unit. An intensive monitoring and treatment system aimed at saving the lives of patients with serious cardiac diseases, including acute myocardial infarction. Heart disease patients who are brought into this facility have their blood pressure, pulse, electrocardiogram, respiratory rate, etc. monitored continuously for 24 hours, and artificial pacemakers, artificial ventilators, electrical defibrillators, etc. are functionally installed in order to quickly respond to any abnormalities. Since this system was established in the United States in the 1960s, there has been a significant reduction in deaths due to arrhythmias, especially those seen in the early stages of acute myocardial infarction, and its effectiveness has been recognized. In Japan, the installation of such systems is also progressing in major hospitals nationwide.

Coronary Care Unitの略。急性心筋梗塞(こうそく)をはじめとする重篤な心臓疾患患者の救命を目的とした集中監視治療システムをいう。本施設へ搬入された心臓病患者は、血圧、脈拍、心電図、呼吸数などを24時間連続監視されるほか、これらの異常に迅速に対処するため、人工ペースメーカー、人工呼吸器、電気除細動器などが機能的に配置されている。1960年代アメリカにおいてこのシステムが開設されて以来、とくに急性心筋梗塞発症早期にみられる不整脈による死亡が大幅に減少し、その有効性が評価された。日本においても全国主要病院にその設置が進みつつある。
