Mentor method

...In addition to the solanaceae, the United States and the Soviet Union have long made efforts to create graft hybrids of fruit trees, vegetables, and flowers. The mentor method, in which a mature plant (called a menthol, meaning leader) is used as a rootstock and a young scion is grafted onto it, is said to be effective. It is believed that chimeras are included among the hybrids actually created in this way.
