The word "modern times" has different meanings depending on the era. In the terminology of Edo period Japanese scholars, it meant the recent times up to the present day, which in today's terms has a strong connotation of the modern era. In officially appointed history books of the mid-Meiji period, "modern times" had a meaning roughly similar to "the Edo period." This too probably meant the recent times preceding the Meiji era. However, in the use of the term by historians today, it can be said that the word "modern times" carries a meaning that goes beyond the meaning of the recent past. In terms of economics in particular, while the period after the Meiji era is seen as the age of capitalism or civil society, the word "modern times" carries a feeling of referring to the period before capitalism.
