It refers to all past organisms at the species level of systematic natural taxonomy, other than those currently extant. However, when the term "extinct organisms" is used emphatically, it is often used to refer to higher-level taxonomic units, such as trilobites and ammonites, that did not survive to the present day. Also, since more than 200 species of organisms (mainly large animals) became extinct around the world at the end of the Quaternary Ice Age, i.e., the end of the Pleistocene Epoch, when the term "extinct organisms" is used, it is often used to refer to the Pleistocene extinct animals.
