Strange sights of the past and present - Kinkokikan

This is a collection of stories published by Bao'o Lao (dating unknown) between 1632 and 1644 in the late Ming Dynasty in China, which selected 40 stories from "San Yan Ni Bai". Since then, it has been widely read in China, surpassing "San Yan Ni Bai", and a sequel has been published. It is a collection of masterpieces that skillfully depict people's joys and sorrows, and is also readable as a collection of short stories, so it was translated and introduced to Western countries early on. In Japan, parts of it were reprinted with kunten (reading marks) in "Shosetsu San Gen", and it was translated into Nishida Korenori's "Tsuzoku Akanawa Kien" (1761) and Tansai Shu's "Tsuzoku Kokin Kikan" (1814), while it was adapted together with "San Yan Ni Bai" and had a great influence on Edo reading books. Representative works include Tsuga Teisho's "Hanabusa Soushi" and "Shige Shigeyawa," and Ueda Akinari's "Ugetsu Monogatari."

中国、明(みん)末の1632～44年の間に、「三言二拍」から40編を選び、抱甕(ほうおう)老人（伝未詳）が刊行した話本の選集。以後中国では「三言二拍」を押しのけて広く読まれ、続書も輩出した。人々の哀歓を巧みに描いた傑作ぞろいで、短編小説集としても十分読むに堪え、早くから西欧各国へ翻訳紹介がなされた。日本へは『小説三言』のなかへその一部が訓点つきで翻刻されたのをはじめとして、西田維則(これのり)『通俗赤縄奇縁』（1761）、淡斎主人『通俗古今奇観』（1814）などとして翻訳される一方、「三言二拍」とともに翻案され、江戸の読本(よみほん)に大きな影響を及ぼした。代表作に都賀庭鐘(つがていしょう)の『英草紙(はなぶさそうし)』『繁野話(しげしげやわ)』、上田秋成(あきなり)の『雨月物語』などがあげられる。
