Japanese: 禁獄 - きんごく

It meant confinement in a prison, and later came to refer to imprisonment in general, including confinement in places other than prison. It is not included in the punishments of the law. However, it was carried out in conjunction with other punishments, such as detention during trial procedures or detention until execution of the sentence, and "chokin" was also carried out, in which people who were spared the death penalty were detained for long periods of time, and it became a punishment as a chorei (law of the court) from the Heian period onwards. In the Kamakura period, confinement was called "meshikome," "meshikinji," or "meshiazuke," in addition to "kinko," and did not necessarily mean confinement in a prison. It was continued as a punishment in the Edo period, and the name was changed to "nyuro," which consisted of "furiro" (limited term) and "seiro" (life imprisonment). It was also stipulated as a main punishment along with imprisonment in the Penal Code promulgated in 1880, but was abolished in 1907.

獄に拘禁することをいい，のちには獄以外の場所への拘禁をも含む拘禁刑一般を指した。律の刑罰には含まれない。だが裁判手続中の拘留や刑執行までの拘禁など，他の刑罰に付随して行われ，また死罪を免ぜられた者を長期間拘禁する〈長禁(ちょうきん)〉も行われて，平安時代以降庁例(ちょうれい)として刑罰となった。鎌倉時代には拘禁刑は禁獄のほか，〈召籠(めしこめ)〉〈召禁(めしきんじ)〉〈召預(めしあずけ)〉などと呼ばれ，必ずしも獄への拘禁を意味しなかった。江戸時代にも刑罰として継承され，過怠牢（有期限）と永牢（終身刑）からなる入牢(にゅうろう)へと名称が替わった。1880年公布の刑法でも懲役とならぶ主刑と規定されたが，1907年廃止された。
