In September 1443 (Kakitsu 3), Hino Arimitsu, a surviving retainer of the Southern Court, seized the Sacred Treasures. Taking advantage of the instability of the shogunate's power after the Kakitsu Rebellion, including the early death of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshikatsu, Arimitsu conspired with Prince Takahide of the Later Southern Court to break into the Imperial Palace (Kinketsu) and set it on fire, seizing the Sacred Seal and Sword, and barricading himself in Mount Hiei. However, he was attacked by Kanrei Hatakeyama Mochikuni and the warrior monks of Enryaku-ji Temple, and was killed along with Prince Takahide and his son Sukechika. The significance of this incident lies in the fact that the remaining retainers of the Akamatsu clan, including the Kodera clan, later recaptured the Sacred Seal, providing an opportunity to restore the head of the Akamatsu family.
