...After the establishment of the shogunate, in 1607 (Keicho 12), three more groups were organized in Suruga under the rule of Shogun Ieyasu, and three more groups were appointed in 1632 (Kan'ei 9), bringing the total to 12 groups, which became the fixed number thereafter. Each group was composed of one chief official (senior councilor, Kikuma-tsume, Shodaifu), four chief officials (chief official, Tsutsuji-tsume, Omei-ai and above), 50 chief officials (chief official, Omei-ai and above), 10 yoriki (chief official or below, rank and title, Ohoba), and 20 doshin (chief official or below, Ohoba). Under the system established in 1723 (8th year of the Kyoho era), the head clerk received a salary of 5,000 koku, the head clerk's salary of 600 koku, the head clerk's salary of 200 koku, the yoriki's salary of 80 koku of current rice, and the doshin's salary of 30 bales of rice for two people. They were not paid salary, but instead were given rice equivalent to one time their salary while on duty (however, when a man with a salary of 10,000 koku or more became a head clerk, he was paid 10,000 koku).

…幕府開設後の1607年(慶長12)大御所家康の膝下駿府にまた3組が編成され，その後32年(寛永9)にさらに3組が取り立てられてつごう12組となり，以後これが定数となった。各組は大番頭1人(老中支配，菊間詰，諸大夫)，大番組頭4人(頭支配，躑躅間詰，御目見以上)，大番士50人(頭支配，御目見以上)，与力10人(御目見以下，役上下，御抱場)，同心20人(御目見以下，御抱場)で編成された。1723年(享保8)の制では，大番頭は役高5000石，大番組頭は600石，大番士は200石，与力は現米80石，同心は30俵二人扶持であり，役料は支給されず，そのかわりに在番中はそれぞれに役高の1倍の合力米が与えられた(ただし，1万石以上のものが大番頭になったときには1万石を支給する)。…
