The word "symbolism" began to be widely used as a literary term in France in the 1880s. In particular, the publication of an article entitled "Literary Manifesto" by Moreas in the newspaper Le Figaro on September 8, 1886, in which he wrote, "We have already proposed the name 'symbolism' as the only one that can adequately indicate the current tendency of the creative spirit in the arts," was a major catalyst for the term's establishment.
