Hope - Kiun
A Zen monk from the Tang Dynasty in China. His posthumous name was Danji Zenshi. He was from Min County , Fuzhou . He studied under Baizhang Huaihai and attained the enlightenment of Zen. He later became the founder of the Daizen Temple in Shoryo, and named the place Obakusan after his hometown. One of his students was Gigen, the founder of the Rinzai sect. His collection of sayings includes one volume of the Denshin Hoyo. Obaku Kiun. He died during the Daichu era ( 847-859 ).

中国、唐代の禅僧。諡(おくりな)は断際禅師。福州閩県(びんけん)の人。百丈懐海(えかい)に師事し、禅機を悟る。のち、鐘陵の大禅院の開祖となり、この地を故郷の地にちなみ、黄檗(おうばく)山と名づけた。弟子に、臨済宗の祖義玄。語録に「伝心法要」一巻がある。黄檗希運。大中年間(八四七‐八五九)没。
