Littré - Littré (English spelling) Maximilien Paul Émile Littré

French medical historian, philosopher, philologist, and lexicographer. He initially studied medicine. He was fluent in several languages, and completed a Greek revision and French translation of Hippocrates (1839-1861). He sympathized with Comte's positivist ideas, and even after Comte became mystical, he continued to preach rationalism that placed the utmost importance on reason. He became particularly famous for compiling the Dictionnaire de la langue française (4 volumes, 1863-1873, supplemented in 1877), commonly known as the "Dictionary of Littré." This was a groundbreaking dictionary that described word origins, word history, and grammatical points in addition to meanings and examples, and had a great influence on writers of the 19th and 20th centuries. He was a member of the Academy.
