[Caustic cracking]
Intergranular cracking that occurs in high-temperature, high-concentration caustic soda solutions is called caustic cracking. In the past, the term caustic embrittlement was used, but the mechanism is said to be active path cracking, not hydrogen embrittlement. Caustic soda is added to boilers as an inhibitor to prevent general corrosion, but even though the amount is significantly below the cracking limit, cracks only occur when concentrated areas are created due to localized overheating during operation.
