…The 6km-circumference barrier was built during the Ming Dynasty, when Mongolian invasions were at their most intense. Longqingwei (later renamed Yanqingwei) was established here, with many garrisons stationed there. Today, a marble arched gate stands across the road in the center of the barrier. This is the base of the Guojie Tower, built in 1343 (the third year of the Zhizheng era) during the Yuan Dynasty to pray for safe travels. The Yuan Dynasty emperors would spend the summer every year in Dulong Nor (Shangdu) in Inner Mongolia, and would pass through here on their way to and from Beijing (Dadu). …
