Abidjan - Abidjan (English spelling)

Abidjan is the former capital of Côte d'Ivoire, located on the coast of the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa. It has a population of 3,199,000 (1999 estimate) and 4,395,243 (2014 census). Although it is surrounded by the deep greenery of tropical rainforest, the central city of Plateau is lined with modern skyscrapers, and the landscape of the intricate lagoons unique to this region has earned it the nickname "Venice of West Africa." When the colonial government moved the capital here from Banjere-Ville in 1934, it was just a small fishing village with a population of several thousand. However, with the opening of the Viridi Canal in 1950, Abidjan Port became a good port where large ocean-going ships could dock, and it began to develop rapidly. Furthermore, after Côte d'Ivoire gained independence in 1960, it became one of the leading modern cities in West Africa with a population of over one million during the country's "miraculous" 20 years of high economic growth. In 1983, the law to move the capital was passed, and the capital functions were gradually transferred to Yamoussoukro. It is the starting point of the international railway to Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso (Upper Volta).
