Eagle ray - Tobiei

A general term for a family or genus of the order Myliobatidae, a class of Chondrichthyes, or the name of one of its species. The Myliobatidae family (English name: eagle rays) has pectoral fins that move forward and extend in front of the head, but they do not form separate cephalic fins, but rather the left and right fins are united to form a movable snout. In addition to the genus Myliobatis , the Myliobatidae family is found in the waters off Japan, and includes the genus Aetomylaeus and the genus Aetobatus . In addition to the eagle ray M. tobijei , the genus M. hamlyni , whose Japanese name has yet to be determined, is also found in the eagle ray genus.

The Japanese eagle ray as a species is characterized by a large spine on its tail and a dorsal fin that is located much further back than the pelvic fin. Reproduction is non-placental viviparous, and once the fetus has absorbed its own egg yolk, it receives nutrition (uterine milk) from the mother and grows. They give birth to 1-10 young in the summer. They are found in various parts of Japan south of southern Hokkaido, the East China Sea, Taiwan, etc., and can reach a total length of 1.5 meters. They are used as an ingredient in fish paste products. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List lists them as "Vulnerable" (as of August 2021).

軟骨魚綱トビエイ目の科や属の総称、またはその1種の名称。トビエイ科Myliobatidae（英名eagle rays）は胸びれが前進して頭部より前に出るが、左右に分離した頭鰭(とうき)を形成せず、左右が合一して可動的な吻部(ふんぶ)を形成することが特徴である。日本近海のトビエイ科にはトビエイ属Myliobatisのほかに、アオスジトビエイ属Aetomylaeus、マダラトビエイ属Aetobatusが知られている。そのうち、トビエイ属にはトビエイM. tobijeiのほかに、和名未定のM. hamlyniが分布する。

　種としてのトビエイ（英名Japanese eagle ray）は尾部に大きな棘(とげ)をもつこと、背びれが腹びれよりもかなり後方に位置することなどが特徴である。生殖方法は非胎盤型の胎生で、胎仔(たいし)は自分の卵黄を吸収してしまうと母体から栄養（子宮ミルク）を受けて成育する。夏季に1～10尾の子を産む。北海道南部以南の日本各地、東シナ海、台湾などに分布し、全長1.5メートルに達する。練り製品の原料になる程度である。国際自然保護連合（IUCN）のレッド・リストでは、絶滅危惧(きぐ)種中の「危急」（VU）に指定されている（2021年8月時点）。
