A general term for a family or genus of the order Myliobatidae, a class of Chondrichthyes, or the name of one of its species. The Myliobatidae family (English name: eagle rays) has pectoral fins that move forward and extend in front of the head, but they do not form separate cephalic fins, but rather the left and right fins are united to form a movable snout. In addition to the genus Myliobatis , the Myliobatidae family is found in the waters off Japan, and includes the genus Aetomylaeus and the genus Aetobatus . In addition to the eagle ray M. tobijei , the genus M. hamlyni , whose Japanese name has yet to be determined, is also found in the eagle ray genus. The Japanese eagle ray as a species is characterized by a large spine on its tail and a dorsal fin that is located much further back than the pelvic fin. Reproduction is non-placental viviparous, and once the fetus has absorbed its own egg yolk, it receives nutrition (uterine milk) from the mother and grows. They give birth to 1-10 young in the summer. They are found in various parts of Japan south of southern Hokkaido, the East China Sea, Taiwan, etc., and can reach a total length of 1.5 meters. They are used as an ingredient in fish paste products. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List lists them as "Vulnerable" (as of August 2021).
