Dēlia (English spelling) Delia

In 426 BC, Athens "purified" Delos, removing all the tombs on the island, forbidding birth and death on the island, and ordering that anyone at risk of such an event be moved to the nearby island of Rhynia. At the same time, they established the four-yearly festival of Delia, which included athletics, music, and poetry contests. In 314 BC, with the help of Macedonia, Delos was temporarily freed from Athenian control, but in 166 BC the Romans gave the island's administration to Athens, making it a free port.
